Fighting Cancer in St. Louis Minority Groups

While all ethnicities can get cancer, studies show that African Americans are 25% more likely to die from the disease compared with Caucasians. Too often, African Americans lack access to medical care, leading to delayed diagnosis of cancer, when treatments are less effective.

Saint Louis University (SLU) hopes to change that for minority groups living in North St. Louis City and County. With a combined $1.25 million grant from The Express Scripts Foundation, Emerson, and Ascension Health, SLU is creating a new education, prevention and research center to improve the cancer survival rates of St. Louis minorities by joining established advocacy organizations to expand screening, detection, and treatments.
