Giving Back to Our Local Community at an Area Food Bank
Each year, the Express Scripts summer interns give back to the community through a group volunteer event. This year, they spent a day at Operation Food Search, sorting and packing food into backpacks to distribute to children throughout South St. Louis City. At the end of the day, 3,400 pounds of food was packed into 680 backpacks, ready for the kids who need them.
For years, the Express Scripts Foundation has supported Operation Food Search, a local food bank, and Operation Backpack, one of the food bank's signature programs. Every Friday afternoon, Operation Backpack distributes backpacks filled with a weekend's worth of nutritious food to local students. The Foundation's financial and volunteer support boosts nutrition for students at four elementary schools located near the Express Scripts headquarters in St. Louis.
"Operation Backpack is a perfect fit for the Express Scripts Foundation, which focuses on education and health," said Sue Schlichter, executive director, Express Scripts Foundation. "Since 2009, funds granted by the Foundation have provided approximately 10,000 backpacks each year to local school children. Our financial and volunteer support helps kids fight hunger so they can start each week ready to learn."
