Summer Safety Rx Tips

Summer is here. With longer days and hot temperatures, your daily routines may be disrupted by spending more time outdoors, traveling on vacations, or celebrating holidays. During the summer season, it’s important to consider how these changes affect taking your medication. Use these tips to keep you and your medication safe during the hot summer months.

Stay Adherent

It may be difficult to take your medication as directed with an irregular schedule or if you are traveling, but it’s important to take your medication at the proper time and frequency as prescribed by your doctor.

Set extra reminders in your smart phone to help you manage your medications so you don’t skip a dose. With the Dose Reminders feature on the Express Scripts mobile app, you can set reminders to help you manage your medications so you don’t skip taking it as scheduled.

If you are traveling to a different time zone, you may need to change your dosing schedule. Contact your pharmacist before you leave to learn more about any changes you may need to make.

Safe Delivery of Medications

As the weather heats up, you don’t have to worry about the delivery of your prescription medications through Home Delivery. By anticipating weather patterns and special packaging, Express Scripts take extensive measures to ensure shipments of prescription drugs are not impacted.

For every medication shipment that leaves our pharmacy, we use advanced technology that takes into account the acceptable temperature range for each medication, as well as the entire forecasted weather patterns that the medication will pass through along its journey from our pharmacy to your hands.

For those medications that require it, we package them in temperature-protective coolers with gel packs to ensure that the medications stay within a safe temperature range — even if the package is sitting outside for several hours after delivery.

Plan Ahead when Traveling

When traveling with medications, plan ahead to help you enjoy your vacation while staying on track.

  • Make a list of all medications and keep it with you at all times. Be sure to include prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and any vitamins or supplements with dosages, frequency, and each drug’s purpose.
  • Pack a full supply of your medication, plus extra in case you experience travel delays. Most medications may be filled for a 90-day supply through Home Delivery to assist in making sure you are covered for the full summer. If you’re traveling for longer than 90 days, you can pause delivery or easily change your shipping address in your Express Scripts account. If you forget to bring your medication on vacation, you can get an emergency refill at a local network pharmacy. You can also use the Find a Pharmacy feature on the Express Scripts mobile app.
  • Carry your medications in their original containers with original labels to prevent anyone from mistaking them for other substances. If you are flying, keep your medications in a carry-on bag.
  • When using public transportation, air, bus or train, call ahead to ask about requirements associated with traveling with needles, syringes and other medication administration equipment. If traveling by air, contact TSA Cares 72 hours prior to your trip to help you through airport security.
  • When traveling abroad, do your research. Some destinations may require vaccines or medications. The CDC Traveler’s Health website shares health information you may need for your trip. You can get some covered vaccines for $0 at participating network pharmacies. Be sure to check with your doctor before your trip.
