COVID-19 Testing
COVID-19 Testing Network

Our COVID-19 Testing Network provides access to pharmacist-administered PCR COVID-19 testing at participating in-network retail pharmacies. These claims process under the pharmacy benefit. Tests are administered by the pharmacist and sent to a lab for results.

FAQ

Q: How can members obtain their medications while maintaining a distance from others?

A: Here are a few options for refilling and renewing medications from home:

  1. Use Express Scripts Home Delivery, which always offers free standard shipping.  Members can easily manage prescription orders through our web portal, or mobile app. If a member currently fills a 30-day supply at a local pharmacy, they can ask their doctor prescribe a 90-day supply and send it to Express Scripts for fulfillment.

  2. Local Pharmacy Home Delivery. More than 20,000 pharmacies on our network provide local delivery options for members, and approximately 92% of our members live within 10 miles of a pharmacy that provides delivery services. Members can locate pharmacies in their network by using the Find a Pharmacy tool on our website and mobile app.

Q: Should people who use medications for a chronic condition obtain early refills?

A: We understand the desire to be prepared. Our standard refill policies, which allow members to refill or renew a prescription medication when they still have a quarter to one-third of their current prescription remaining, should help them stay on track during this time.

Members can have peace of mind with their prescription medications by using the Express Scripts Pharmacy, which offers free home delivery of up to 90-day supplies of prescription maintenance medications. Pharmacists are available 24/7 to answer questions, offer counseling and support, and assist with prescription orders. Members are encouraged to refill their medications responsibly.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will update our information and policy if or when the situation changes. We are committed to taking appropriate actions to ensure members have medication on hand to stay healthy.

Q: Are medications currently safe to take?

A: Yes, currently your medication is safe to take. We maintain rigorous safety standards for the inventory in our pharmacies, and follow guidance from the FDA, CDC and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. We only dispense medications that are approved by the FDA for U.S. market. All drugs approved for use in the United States must comply with FDA manufacturing standards to assure quality and product label requirements.

Q. Can COVID-19 live on a pill bottle or packaging?

A: It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. However, this is not the primary way the virus spreads. The vast majority of transmission is by droplet from direct contact with infected individuals.

There is a lower risk of spread from your pill bottle or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures. Members can take extra precautions by wiping down the external mailing package with a disinfectant wipe before they open, and always wash their hands after.

Q: Is the Express Scripts Pharmacy experiencing any shortages of medications due to COVID-19?

A: Overall, we are seeing an increase in prescription volume across all products due to more members moving their prescriptions to 90-day fills through the Express Scripts Pharmacy for home delivery. This is a positive trend since it’s the most convenient, cost-effective, and safest way for members to get their medications, particularly as some are directed to shelter-in-place. In general, our supply at the Express Scripts pharmacy remains stable at this time.

Q: Members are reporting shortages of medications at their local network pharmacy. What is Express Scripts doing about retail network inventories?

A: Our retail network team has been keeping in close daily contact with the pharmacies in our network to monitor volumes and supply related to the COVID-19 epidemic.

If a member encounters product unavailability at a local pharmacy, they can use our website, or mobile app to locate another nearby pharmacy that may be able to fill their prescription. The pharmacists working in the local pharmacies can and should easily transfer the prescription for patient.

For maintenance medications, members can transfer their prescription to Express Scripts Pharmacy for free home delivery. This can be accomplished easily via the web portal, mobile app or by calling us at the number of the back of their member ID card.

Q: I read that the FDA issued an emergency authorization of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19. What does that mean and how does it impact my members?

A: The FDA issued an emergency use authorization for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat patients hospitalized with Covid-19. The authorization is limited to teenage and adults patients who are currently hospitalized. Under the emergency use authorization, health care providers must contact their local or state health department to access the drugs. The authorization has no impact on plans at this time.
