Our Frontline Nurses Help Keep Patients Home
As we face the challenges of living in a world with COVID-19, healthcare heroes, including nurses, are receiving much-deserved recognition.
I’d like to shine a spotlight on one group of nurses in particular as we celebrate National Nurses Week, May 6-12.
Accredo’s 600+ home infusion nurses are truly on the frontline every day of the year, making home visits to patients with complex and rare diseases. These community-based nurses provide care to patients across the country by infusing medications at a time and place convenient for the patient and educating patients who self-administer their medication.
Living with conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension, cancer, asthma, primary immunodeficiency and hemophilia, means the patients these nurses care for are in the high risk group of becoming infected with the coronavirus.
Thanks to our field nurses, their medication is administered in the safety – and comfort – of their home.
In addition to a robust infection control plan already in place, Accredo has implemented additional safety procedures, including a telephonic pre-screening of each patient to understand the COVID-19 exposure risk. This information informs the nurse of the personal protective equipment that must be worn prior to entering the home.
Diana, an Accredo home infusion nurse in Florida, recently cared for a patient who contracted the virus. The patient had traveled out of state to attend her mother’s funeral. A difficult time was made worse when she began having symptoms when she returned home. Diana continued to administer the patient’s medication, and thankfully, the patient has recovered.
Diana told our team that one of the things she enjoys most about her job is the opportunity to spend time with her patients and truly get to know them. During this time of social distancing, I know she and all our home infusion nurses are providing emotional support as well as nursing care.
On behalf of Accredo and all those we serve, a tremendous thank you to these health care heroes who administer life-changing and lifesaving therapies to patients every day.
