Q. What is specialty pharmacy?
A. Specialty pharmacy is the term used to describe certain medications and a set of services designed to meet the particular needs of people who take medications to treat certain conditions such as anemia, neutropenia, cancer, cystic fibrosis, deep vein thrombosis, Gaucher disease, growth hormone deficiency, hepatitis C, immune deficiency, erectile dysfunction, infertility, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and respiratory syncytial virus. Many of these medications require injection and have special shipping and handling needs. These medications could also be oral or infusion medications.


Q. How do I know if I am eligible to receive services through the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy?
A. Accredo is the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy. You may be eligible to receive specialty pharmacy services if your plan sponsor includes these services as part of your prescription drug plan. To find out if you are eligible, or call 800.803.2523.


Q. What additional services will I receive through Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy?
A. Members who are eligible for services through the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy will receive support from pharmacists and nurses who are trained in specialty medications, their side effects, and the conditions they treat. Also, because many of these medications require injection or special handling, members will receive:
  • Expedited shipping of specialty medications to their home or doctor's office, where allowable by law.
  • Supplemental supplies, such as needles and syringes, that are needed to administer the medication.
  • Scheduling of refills and coordination of services with home care providers, case managers, and doctors or other healthcare professionals.


Q. Will I receive these additional services for my other prescriptions?
A. The additional services available through Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy are only for your specialty medications.


Q. How do I get started with the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy?
A. You can transfer your existing specialty prescriptions from a retail pharmacy to home delivery online, or call 800.803.2523.


Q. I have a prescription for a 90-day supply of specialty medications. Where do I send my prescriptions?
A. You can mail all your prescriptions to the address below or call 800.803.2523.

If you are already using home delivery for your specialty medication, your specialty prescription will automatically be transferred to the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy.


Q. Will I pay for shipping of my specialty medications?
A. No. There is no charge for expedited delivery of specialty medications that are delivered Monday through Friday. Shipping charges may apply for weekend deliveries based on your individual medical needs.


Q. How long will it take to get my specialty medications?
A. We schedule delivery of your specialty medications so you can receive them where and when you need them. All specialty medications, once they are cleared for dispensing and scheduled for delivery, are delivered on the date you scheduled at no additional charge. Additional charges may apply for weekend deliveries. Weekend delivery charges are reviewed based on individual medical needs.

Q. What if I need my specialty medications shipped to my doctor's office?
A. Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacies provides expedited shipping of specialty medications to your doctor's office, as well as to your home, where allowable by law.


Q. Can I still receive the additional services of the Express Scripts Specialty Pharmacy but not the counseling calls?
A. Yes, just call 800.803.2523 and ask to have your name removed from the call list.

Q. Why do I have to answer questions when I select an Accredo prescription?
A. In order to complete your specialty prescription online, Accredo asks a series of therapy questions. Based on the answers you provide, we will offer you a selection of delivery dates.


Q. None of the delivery dates presented for my Accredo prescription work for me. How do I request another delivery date?
A. Please select “None of the delivery dates listed meets my current needs,” and an Accredo Patient Care Advocate will contact you to arrange delivery. You may also call the toll-free number provided if you prefer to contact Accredo immediately.


Q. My Accredo prescription is not available for refill in the Order Center home page. How do I order?
A. Prescriptions that are available for refill are listed in the Order Center. Please call Accredo at the number listed, and a Patient Care Advocate will be happy to assist you.


Q. Where do I find my Accredo prescription supplies?
A. If your prescription includes supplies, you will be asked if supplies should be included in your order.


Q. The Accredo prescription supplies displayed are different from my last order, what should I do?
A. Please call Accredo at 800.803.2523, and a Patient Care Advocate will be happy to assist you.


Q. I selected an Accredo prescription for refill online, but was informed I need to call to complete online. Why can’t I order it online?
A. In some cases, an Accredo specialty drug is not available for refill due to the complexity of the therapy. An Accredo Patient Care Advocate will need to complete your refill.


Q. Why can’t I order my Accredo prescription online now that my dosage has changed?
A. If your doctor has changed the dosage of your medication, Accredo will need a new prescription from your doctor. Please call 800.803.2523 to speak with a Patient Care Advocate.


Q. Why is a signature required for my Accredo prescription?
A. Your shipment may require a signature upon receipt due to the cost of the medication, the type of address (such as business or apartment), or manufacturer or health plan guidelines.


Q. Can I make changes to an Accredo prescription that I have already submitted?
A. Once your refill has been submitted, please call Accredo at 800.803.2523, and a Patient Care Advocate will be happy to assist you.


Q. What is a sharps container?
A. A Sharps Container is a specially-made receptacle that is used to contain hazardous piercing instruments such as needles, EpiPens and IV catheters, which reduces the chance of spreading infections.
