Managing automatic refills
Automatic Refill sends your eligible medications to you automatically, so you don’t have to remember to place a refill order each time.
Here’s how it works:
When it’s time for your next refill, Express Scripts® Pharmacy processes and ships your medication automatically.
If you run out of refills, Express Scripts Pharmacy will contact your prescriber to request a new prescription. You’ll be notified before that request is made.
Before each refill begins processing, we notify you in advance so you have time to make changes if needed—such as updating your shipping address, delaying a refill or stopping the medication.
Notifications are sent at least 10 days before processing through your preferred communication method (letter, text, email or phone).
Medicare Part D members receive notifications 15 and 10 days before processing.
You can update your communication preferences online or by calling a Patient Care Advocate (PCA).
Some states require annual consent to continue Automatic Refills (for example, Arkansas, California and Ohio). If consent is required, you’ll receive a message in advance and must respond for your refill to continue.
Automatic Refill helps ensure you stay on track with your medications—without the extra steps.
Automatic Refill helps simplify how you manage ongoing medications by reducing the need for repeat actions and reminders.
Key benefits include:
- Convenience: Eligible medications are shipped automatically, so you don’t have to remember to place refill orders.
- Continuity of care: When refills run out, Express Scripts Pharmacy helps coordinate with your prescriber to keep your therapy moving forward.
- Advance notifications: You receive communications ahead of processing, giving you time to review or make changes if needed.
- Effortless home delivery: Pairing Automatic Refill with AutoPay helps streamline payment and delivery for a smoother experience.
- Peace of mind: Automatic Refill is designed to support long‑term medication use with a simple, reliable process.
On the member website or mobile app, an automatic refill indicator appears next to medications that are eligible for Automatic Refills. If you don’t see this indicator, that medication isn’t eligible for automatic refills at this time.
You can also call Express Scripts customer service, and a representative can help confirm whether a medication is eligible.
In general, medications eligible for Automatic Refills are those taken on a long-term basis and written for at least a 56-day supply. Controlled substances, short-term medications and prescriptions written for less than a 56-day supply aren’t eligible. Additional eligibility criteria may apply.
You can manage your automatic refills online or by calling to speak with a Patient Care Advocate (PCA). This includes updating your shipping address, delaying a refill or stopping automatic refills for one or more medications.
Automatic refills are also optional. If you choose to stop automatic refills online, go to the Prescriptions menu, select Automatic Refills, and choose “Stop Automatic Refills” for the medication you want to remove. Any changes must be made before the refill begins processing.
If you run out of refills for a medication enrolled in Automatic Refill, Express Scripts Pharmacy will contact your prescriber to request a new prescription and will notify you before doing so.
If your prescription changes or you’re no longer taking a medication, you should stop Automatic Refill for that prescription online or by contacting Express Scripts Pharmacy. Ask your prescriber to send a new 90‑day prescription for your updated medication; if it’s eligible, you can enroll it in Automatic Refill.
If your doctor changes, let your new provider know to send existing and future prescriptions to Express Scripts Pharmacy, and we’ll also reach out for new prescriptions when needed.
Some states require patients to provide annual consent to continue using Automatic Refill. If consent is required, you’ll receive a notification in advance and must respond for your refill to be processed and for your enrollment to continue. Additional consent requirements may also apply for Department of Defense (DoD) members.
Automatic Refills generally ship before you run out of medication, based on your prescription schedule and shipping preferences. You’ll receive notifications when your prescription begins processing and again when it ships. You can manage how you receive these updates on the member website.
You can update your contact preferences online or by speaking with a Patient Care Advocate (PCA) to make sure you receive updates about your Automatic Refill status.
