What began in 1986 with one of the nation’s first home delivery pharmacy services has grown into a modern, connected experience that puts members at the very center. From pioneering cost-saving solutions to launching high-tech medication dispensing and personalized support programs, every step of our journey has been shaped by one singular focus: creating health care built around you.

A history of innovation

Our history as a company is defined by solutions that challenged the status quo and set new standards for pharmacy care.

• 1986: A health maintenance organization (HMO) and regional drugstore chain launch the first mail-service pharmacy in St. Louis. On February 3, 1987, the first 11 prescription orders arrive — handled by just five employees, pioneering home delivery pharmacy and marking the beginning of Express Scripts Pharmacy.
• 2000s: We advanced automated fulfillment capabilities in our home delivery pharmacies, using robotics and intelligent systems to safely and efficiently fill millions of prescriptions with high accuracy and speed.
• 2005–2010s: We began integrating pharmacists into patient care teams resulting in Therapeutic Resource Centers (TRCs), specialized clinical teams that provide personalized, condition-specific support to patients with complex or chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and pulmonary disease — improving outcomes through expert guidance, 24/7 access and coordinated care.
• 2010: We opened The Lab, a hub for collaboration and innovation to solve healthcare’s toughest challenges.
• 2012: Accredo, a specialty pharmacy focused on complex and chronic conditions, became part of Express Scripts Pharmacy to enhance personalized care through TRCs providing expert support for conditions such as oncology, HIV, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, transplant, pulmonary arterial hypertension, blood and immune disorders, and rare diseases.
• 2025: We expanded GLP-1 support with EnReachRx, a high-touch clinical model integrated with Evernorth EnGuide^SM Pharmacy, offering specialized care and drug spend optimization, supporting members on GLP-1 therapy to improve outcomes and ensure reliable access.

Each of these milestones reflects Express Scripts Pharmacy’s commitment to innovation while maintaining our ongoing promise to make pharmacy care more accessible, affordable and supportive for our members.

Our newest innovation: Evernorth EnGuide Pharmacy

Building on decades of trusted home delivery expertise, in 2025 we launched Evernorth EnGuide Pharmacy, a specialized home delivery pharmacy dedicated to serving members taking injectable GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic^®, Wegovy^®, Zepbound^® and Mounjaro^®.

EnGuide combines convenient home delivery with personalized support, staffed by clinical pharmacists who understand these therapies and can guide members through each step of their treatment journey. EnGuide also offers tools and resources to help members stay on track with their treatments and manage costs. By focusing on one of the fastest growing areas of care, Evernorth EnGuide Pharmacy reflects how Express Scripts Pharmacy continues to anticipate member needs and deliver innovative solutions that make a real difference in our members’ lives.
