Out of medication refills? It’s time for a new prescription.

A woman holding a prescription medication bottle in one hand and a tablet in the other talks to a doctor through a telehealth visit.

If you’re out of refills for your medication, it’s time for a new prescription. This is known as a prescription renewal.

The fastest way to have your prescription renewed by Express Scripts® Pharmacy is to ask your doctor to ePrescribe a 3-month supply with refills. Our pharmacy team receives the prescription electronically and begins processing it to send to you.

You can also log in to your Express Scripts account and select “Request an Rx.” We’ll contact your doctor on your behalf to confirm the prescription.

What if I need a prescription renewed but I don’t have a doctor right now?

Maybe you’ve just moved and haven’t found a new doctor yet. Maybe your health benefits changed and your previous doctor is no longer in network. No matter what the reason is, you don’t have to go without the prescription medication you need.

With MDLIVE, you can see a board-certified doctor 24/7 by phone or video to support urgent care needs like cold and flu, pink eye, and yeast infections.

Doctors with MDLIVE are also available for virtual primary care by appointment. They can provide ongoing care and renew prescriptions for many chronic conditions such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid issues, and more. They can even make a referral if you need to see a specialist or have any lab work done.

Getting started with MDLIVE

  1. Check your benefits to make sure your health plan or employer covers MDLIVE primary care services.
  2. Sign in or create an account on MDLIVE. You can also confirm your eligibility during this step if you’re unsure.
  3. For prescription renewals, schedule an MDLIVE primary care appointment.1
  4. Request to have your long-term prescription medications delivered by Express Scripts® Pharmacy.

Make sure you have your medication label on hand before starting your virtual visit. That has most of the important information about your prescription medication, including the medication name and strength, as well as the prescriber.

Don’t forget to set up automatic refills going forward

Once we receive your prescription, you can make things simple by setting up automatic refills for qualifying long-term medications. You can do this through your Express Scripts online account or through the mobile app. Then your medication will arrive when you need it. That’s one less thing you’ll have to remember!

1 MDLIVE does not guarantee a prescription will be written; that is at the discretion of each doctor.
